WARDOGS Connection Error and Server Down Fixes: Queue, Ping, Disconnects
Fix WARDOGS connection errors, stuck queues, high ping and match disconnects in Early Access with a server-first triage ladder before you touch your PC.
FAQ
Why does WARDOGS say connection error when my internet is fine?
Why am I stuck in the WARDOGS queue?
Is WARDOGS server down right now?
Why do I keep getting disconnected from WARDOGS mid-match?
If WARDOGS launches but you cannot get into a match — a connection error, a queue that never clears, a session that will not join, or a match that drops you back to the desktop — you are almost certainly fighting server capacity, not your own PC. This page is the triage ladder for that whole family of problems.
It is deliberately scoped: if the game will not start at all (crash dialogs, the game closing before the menu), that is a different fault and belongs to our Easy Anti-Cheat and launch error fixes. Here we only cover what happens after the game runs and you are trying to reach and stay in a live server.
First: Which WARDOGS Connection Failure Are You Hitting?
The fixes below are ordered, but they only work if you match them to the right symptom. Identify your failure first:
- Connection error / failed to join session — the game runs, matchmaking tries, and you get bounced back.
- Stuck in queue — you sit in a waiting line that stalls, resets, or never admits you.
- Server down / “servers restart” — nobody can in; other players report the same thing at the same time.
- High ping and packet loss — you are in, but rubber-banding, teleporting, or getting shot around corners.
- Mid-match disconnect / kicked — you drop out of a running match.
- Voice chat silent — you can play but proximity or squad voice is dead.
Start at the top of the ladder and stop as soon as you are in a stable match.
Step 1: Rule Out a Server-Side Problem Before Touching Your PC
Launch week for a large-scale online shooter is dominated by server capacity, and WARDOGS is no exception. The game reported a launch-day peak in the low hundreds of thousands of concurrent players, and Bulkhead has publicly acknowledged queues and delays and apologised for them — a server-side incident is the single most likely explanation for a connection failure right now. Before you change anything on your machine, spend sixty seconds confirming it is not on them:
- Check the official WARDOGS channels — the Steam news feed, the developer and publisher social accounts, and the in-game banner if there is one — for restart, maintenance or degradation notices.
- Skim the Steam community discussions and the r/WarDogs subreddit for fresh “servers down” or “server restart” reports. If dozens of people are posting the same failure within the last few minutes, stop troubleshooting and wait; no local fix survives a server outage.
A useful, low-effort sanity check: does the same failure happen on a completely different network (phone hotspot, a friend’s connection)? If it follows you everywhere, that points back at the servers, not your router.
Step 2: Fix Being Stuck in the Queue or Matchmaking
A queue is a capacity gate. You are waiting for a slot on the servers you were routed to, and during launch congestion it can stall. What actually helps:
- Wait through the peak. Queue length tracks live player counts; it clears fastest off-peak and worst in the first hours after a patch or a big weekend push.
- Do not quit and re-queue repeatedly. In several queue systems, backing out resets your position — abandoning a near-front slot to retry can put you at the back. Give one queue a real chance.
- Confirm the client is not stuck. If the timer has visibly reset or frozen for many minutes, restart the game (and Steam) so it re-queries server state rather than staring at a stale queue screen.
There is no confirmed, safe way to skip the queue. Treat any “WARDOGS queue skipper” or “server slot tool” as hostile — see the warning at the bottom of this page.
Step 3: Fix the “Connection Error” and “Failed to Join Session”
When the game is up but refuses to enter a match, work from the cheapest, most likely fix down:
- Verify game files in Steam (Library → right-click → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files). A missing or mismatched networking binary reproduces as a join failure.
- Repair Easy Anti-Cheat. A silent EAC failure often surfaces as “cannot connect” rather than a crash. The full procedure is in our launch error fix ladder.
- Turn off your VPN for one test session. VPNs interfere with game server handshakes and anti-cheat connections constantly, and they are the fastest thing to rule out.
- Restart the router/modem. A fresh lease and a clean NAT table clear a surprising number of “my connection worked yesterday” cases.
Step 4: Reduce High Ping and Packet Loss
If you can connect but the match feels unplayable — rubber-banding, hit registration that ignores your shots, teleporting players — the culprit is usually instability (packet loss and jitter), not the headline speed of your plan.
- Use a wired ethernet connection for one match to see if Wi-Fi interference is the cause. In a data-heavy 100-player sandbox, Wi-Fi dropouts show up as disconnects and teleporting.
- Close background uploads and downloads (cloud sync, game launchers updating, streaming, large file transfers). They starve the game of a stable packet stream.
- Update network and chipset drivers from your motherboard or laptop vendor, not a generic updater.
- Flush your DNS (
ipconfig /flushdnsin a Command Prompt) to clear stale server resolution.
Step 5: Mid-Match Disconnects and Being Kicked
Dropping out of a running match is its own category, and the honest answer for the launch window is that a lot of it is not you:
- Server restarts and crashes eject everyone at once. Community threads during the launch period specifically flag scheduled and unscheduled server restarts, so if a whole lobby vanishes, it is on the server.
- If only you disconnect, it is an instability problem — run Step 4, and add Windows power plan “High performance” so the NIC is not being told to sleep.
- Do not reflexively assume an anti-cheat ban for a disconnect. Read any on-screen message exactly; a genuine kick or ban states itself. Unexplained drops are far more often network or server than enforcement.
Voice Chat Not Working Is a Separate Problem
If you can play but squad or proximity voice is dead while everyone else is silent, that is usually the voice service or your input device, not your ability to reach the server. Confirm your microphone is the Windows default device and not muted at the hardware level, and check whether voice recovers in a fresh match — a per-session voice failure during launch congestion points back at the service, not your headset. Getting your settings dialed in is covered in our best settings guide.
What Not to Do: Fake “Fixer” Tools and Account Offers
Desperation in launch week is exactly when malware spreads. Do not run “WARDOGS connection fixer”, “server slot”, “queue skipper”, or “unlock” executables from Discord, YouTube comments, or file-sharing sites — they are how accounts and machines get compromised, not how connection problems get solved. Our cheats and malware scam warning covers the pattern. Real fixes come from Steam, the game’s own settings, and official Bulkhead and Team17 channels.
Once You Are In: Make the First Match Count
Most connection misery is transient capacity pain that eases as the launch wave spreads across servers. When you finally land a stable match, spend your first minutes cheaply: run through the PC and network settings priorities and the beginner economy guide so early deaths do not wipe out your bank. To check whether it is still the servers, watch the live community channels named above rather than reinstalling for the third time.
If you have worked the entire ladder — server check, queue, file verification, EAC repair, VPN off, wired connection, drivers — and you are still failing to connect while others around you succeed, open a support ticket with Team17 including your exact error text, the timestamp, your region, and whether a second network reproduces it. During Early Access those details are exactly what the developers are collecting.
Concurrent-player and sales figures are as reported in the developer’s Early Access launch announcements; queue, restart and voice-service behavior on this page is community-reported from the launch window and is Unconfirmed pending official notes. This page will be updated as fixes are verified against live builds.
