FAQ

What is WARDOGS?
WARDOGS is an online first-person shooter built around large-scale combined-arms combat. Up to 100 players split into three teams and fight over one randomly placed control zone, buying weapons, gear and vehicles with persistent in-game cash that they earn through teamwork. Bulkhead develops it, Team17 publishes it, and it has been in Steam Early Access since 10 September 2026. It is played online only and runs on Windows PC.
Is WARDOGS free to play?
No. The Steam store listed WARDOGS at $39.99 in the United States on 20 October 2026 with no discount, alongside a $49.99 Supporter Edition and a separate $12.99 cosmetic Supporter Pack. The listing shows no demo. The WARDOGS Playtest entry is a separate Steam app that hosted the pre-launch beta weekends; we found nothing saying it gives free access to the live game. Prices vary by region and sale, so check your own store page.
Is WARDOGS on PS5, Xbox, Mac or Steam Deck?
Today WARDOGS runs on Windows PC through Steam only. The store lists no Mac or Linux build, and Valve rates Steam Deck compatibility as Unsupported. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions are officially announced for 2028, but only the year is known: no console date, price, Game Pass deal or crossplay promise has been announced.
Can you play WARDOGS solo or offline?
No solo or offline mode is listed. The Steam store tags WARDOGS as Multi-player, PvP and Online PvP only, and the developer describes the current build as online multiplayer with proximity voice chat. You can play as a lone wolf inside a match, but every match is a live online game with other players.
Who makes WARDOGS?
Bulkhead develops WARDOGS and Team17 publishes it, according to the Steam store listing. In February 2026 Bulkhead said its design team had spent years working with the creators of the original ARMA King of the Hill mod before building WARDOGS as a standalone game, and that the game runs on Unreal Engine 5 with the studio's own War Dynamics Framework.
How many players are in a WARDOGS match?
Up to 100, split across three teams. That is the match size, not the number of people online. The number of players online at any moment is a separate figure that changes by the hour, so it is covered on our player count page with the time each reading was taken.
How many copies has WARDOGS sold?
The studio announced 1.25 million copies on 11 September 2026, 2 million on 15 September and 3 million on 26 September, and its 9 October Season 02 Preview says "3+ million sales and counting". No newer official figure had been posted by 20 October. Sales are copies sold, not active players, and we do not use third-party revenue estimates.

WARDOGS is an online-only first-person shooter about large-scale warfare: up to 100 players, split into three teams, fight over one control zone and buy their gear with cash they earn by helping each other. Bulkhead develops it, Team17 publishes it, and it has been in Steam Early Access since 10 September 2026 — on Windows PC only, for now.

This is the definition page for this site: one place that says what the game is, what it costs, where you can play it and how a match works, with every fact labelled by how we know it. Everything below was read on 20 October 2026, with Season 2 (Update 0.2.0) live, unless a row says otherwise.

What kind of game is WARDOGS?

Steam’s description calls it an “All-Out Warfare FPS”: tactical gunplay and combined-arms combat — infantry, vehicles, helicopters, artillery — plus building and destruction, in a sandbox that holds up to 100 players. The mode is inspired by King of the Hill. There is no attacker and defender in the usual sense; three teams contest one zone, and cash pays for everything you carry onto the field.

The studio is explicit about what it is not: in its February 2026 Q&A it said the game is neither a battle royale nor an extraction shooter (Official, Steam announcement, 18 February 2026). It is also a standalone game rather than a mod, though the mode has a mod behind it: Bulkhead said its design team spent years working with the creators of the original ARMA King of the Hill mod, and built a standalone game meant to get past that mod’s limits (Official, Steam announcement, 19 February 2026).

The same Q&A set the game in “Kolchia”, a war-torn region the studio places in the industrial mountains of Eastern Europe, with three factions fighting over a resource called PV-1: Lonestar (Western paramilitary), Valkyra (a faction that wants to restore a Soviet-style state) and Manticore (a Persian shadow army). The faction names are still current — the camos in the Supporter Pack on today’s store page are branded Valkyra, Lonestar and Manticore.

The review numbers drift every hour. How they got here — a slide from Very Positive in September — is on is WARDOGS worth it, and that page, not this one, is where the trend is kept current.

How does a WARDOGS match work?

Three teams fight to hold one zone. The store text describes a randomised 2 × 2 km Control Zone placed inside a larger map; the team with the most players inside it earns points, and the first team to 100 points wins. Because the zone lands somewhere different each match, the studio’s February Q&A says “no two matches will be the same” and puts the whole map at 256 km² — a pre-launch figure we have not re-confirmed.

What you do on the way is up to you. The store text lists chasing the Hot Zone for double cash, sniping from a ghillie suit, ferrying teammates and supplies by helicopter, building a forward operating base at a chokepoint and shelling the enemy from an artillery tank. Buildings can be destroyed with rocket launchers, and proximity voice chat lets you talk to players near you in the game world (all Official — Steam store text).

How points are counted and what the Hot Zone changes are covered in how to win game modes; classes and what to buy first are in the beginner guide and the best class breakdown.

How does the WARDOGS cash economy work?

This is the part of WARDOGS that is least like other shooters. The store text says every player starts with $10,000 and spends it each life on a custom loadout — weapons, gear, utility and vehicles. Teamplay actions pay cash: reviving squadmates, carrying friendlies to the zone, controlling the objective. Cash stays in your account from match to match, and the Hot Zone doubles the payout (Official — Steam store text).

The February 2026 pre-launch Q&A added two things. Cash can be exchanged for gold bars, an endgame currency spent on cosmetics in the Gold Market; and roles are not fixed classes — you buy specialist gear and earn XP on role tracks, which it counted as six, from Medic to Pilot. The Supporter Pack text we re-read on 20 October still mentions gold bars, so that part is still current. The count of six tracks has not been re-confirmed.
